STAR Flight worked with CMC Rescue to develop the Spider Rig to solve the problem of moving a large amount of people from a hazardous environment
in a short amount of time. Whether from rapidly rising water in a flash flood, or from one rooftop to another during a high-rise fire, we needed
a safe method to expeditiously move victims with our helicopters. The CMC Spider Rig grants us the ability to quickly deploy a single rescuer to
a high-rise rooftop, a bus roof, or other high-risk environment, and then short haul up to six victims at a time. Locking carabiners at the end
of each "leg" allows us to move personnel or victims with any variety of rescue devices including rescue/lifting harnesses, seat harnesses, or
cinch-collars. Additionally, we are now able to quickly and efficiently use the CMC Spider Rig to insert up to four firefighters and their
equipment, thereby allowing us to utilize the helicopter in a dual-role of inserting rescue personnel while simultaneously evacuating victims.
In a recent live-victim drill, STAR Flight was able to move 30 victims in 30 minutes, compared to only 7 victims in the same time using a
traditional hoisting method - a difference of 4:1! And this technique only requires one rescue personnel on the roof and one at the landing zone. Any shorthaul-equipped aircraft could easily and quickly utilize the Spider Rig in this manner.
STAR Flight has worked closely with CMC Rescue many times over the years to develop a number of rescue devices for the high-performance/high-risk
environment, including a Y-band strap to build a redundant safety feature for helicopter short haul, a Helicopter Rescue-Victim (HRV) strap for
safer hoist operations, and an Emergency Release Device (ERD), a cut-away safety strap for lowering medical bags on the hoist.
STAR Flight is a public-safety helicopter program in Austin, Texas that specializes in medical, rescue, and firefighting missions. All medical
crew members perform as Helicopter Rescue Specialists, trained to safely operate in swift-water and high-angle environments. We operate
Eurocopter EC-145's, equipped with electric hoists and a dual-cargo hook.
